- Preheat your oven to 180°F (82°C) to keep finished dumplings warm.
- In a pot, combine water, maple syrup, rum (if using), and salt; heat until boiling.
- In a food processor, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
- Cut cold butter into pieces, add to the flour mixture, and pulse until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Transfer mixture to a bowl and add buttermilk; stir until just combined.
- Drop spoonfuls of dough into boiling syrup, filling the pot halfway.
- Cover and simmer dumplings on low for about 10 minutes until fluffy.
- Use a slotted spoon to transfer dumplings to a warm oven-safe dish.
- If syrup is too thick, add a splash of water to adjust consistency.
- Serve warm with syrup, whipped cream or ice cream, and sprinkle with pecans.
