Method
 

Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 180°F (82°C) to keep finished dumplings warm.
  2. In a pot, combine water, maple syrup, rum (if using), and salt; heat until boiling.
  3. In a food processor, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  4. Cut cold butter into pieces, add to the flour mixture, and pulse until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Transfer mixture to a bowl and add buttermilk; stir until just combined.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of dough into boiling syrup, filling the pot halfway.
  7. Cover and simmer dumplings on low for about 10 minutes until fluffy.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to transfer dumplings to a warm oven-safe dish.
  9. If syrup is too thick, add a splash of water to adjust consistency.
  10. Serve warm with syrup, whipped cream or ice cream, and sprinkle with pecans.
