Ingredients

For the Breading
  • 1 cup Panko Breadcrumbs Provides a light, crispy coating; substitute with regular breadcrumbs for a heartier texture.
  • 1 tbsp Old Bay Seasoning Adds a distinctive blend of spices and heat; can be swapped with Cajun seasoning.
  • 1 tsp Marjoram Contributes an herbal note; oregano can be used as an alternative.
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder Enhances flavor; fresh minced garlic can be substituted.
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt Elevates the overall flavor; sea salt works as a suitable alternative.
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper Adds a mild heat; ground white pepper can be used for a more subtle finish.
For the Mushrooms

Step-by-Step Instructions for Crispy Fried Mushrooms
  1. In a medium bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs, Old Bay seasoning, marjoram, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until evenly combined.
  2. Rinse the white button mushrooms under cold water to remove any dirt, then dry them thoroughly with a paper towel.
  3. Place the cleaned mushrooms in a zippered storage bag along with all-purpose flour. Shake to coat the mushrooms evenly. Dip each mushroom into the buttermilk, then roll in the panko mixture.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C). Add the breaded mushrooms in small batches.
  5. Fry the mushrooms for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown, stirring occasionally. Drain on paper towels.
  6. For air frying, preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Cook the breaded mushrooms in a single layer for 5-7 minutes.
